Stations of the Cross
Saint Alban's Episcopal Church, Los Angeles
Febuary 20th — April 5th, 2026
Stations emerged when my local church asked me to create an artistic rendition of the Stations of the Cross, a 14-step Catholic devotional practice that commemorates the crucifixion of Christ through prayer and iconic imagery. Using my position on a men's collegiate rowing team, I created a series of analog images of my teammates’ faces during and after exercise. Through tight cropping, I deny the viewer the full body, decontextualizing these sites of spectacle into something strange and ambiguous. In removing the supposed goal of the athlete’s exertion, I leave the viewer without the alibi of investment in the action of sport to justify or excuse their own desire to look upon the body that is suffering. Through the installation, I quietly propose athletics as a structure which, like crucifixion, might be understood as a survival of our collective desire for sacrifice. Though viewers encounter the work through a familiar framework of devotional contemplation, the images subtly call into question heroic narratives of origin and our continued cultural fascination with ritualized suffering.
